Thomas W. Maher February 24, 1943 – October 3, 2017. Lost a courageous 5 year battle to heart and kidney disease. Proud Army veteran 1963-1966, IBM employee for five years and U.S. Post Office employee for 30 years. Preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. and Lillian (nee Berkovitz) Maher and his brother-in-law Thomas Laskowski. Survived by his loving sisters; Sharon (Allen) Mikuta, Linda (Rick) Josd, Wendy Maher (John Schwanbeck) and Robin (Tom) O’Neill; devoted uncle to Daniel Mikuta, John and Christian O’Neill, Miranda (Ben) Gingrich, Michael (Erin) Laskowski, Barbara (Joe) Romero and the late Deborah Mikuta; dearest great uncle to Shaun and Amanda Laskowski, Joey and Angie Romero and his loyal cat companion, Lilly. Tom attended Southern Illinois University. His first job was with IBM repairing computers. He then spent 30 years with the U.S. Post Office before retiring. He was proud veteran serving three years active duty from 1963-1966 and three years reserve. He spent 1 1/2 years in Berlin and one year in Sinop, Turkey. Tom cherished his maternal grandparents whom he lived with during the time his father served in WW II. One of Tom’s greatest passions was abandoned animals. He visited shelters often and cared for many over his lifetime. His other passions included bike riding, photography and reading. He was a math problem solving wiz. He was always generous and had a specially selected gift in hand when visiting others. He will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
