“To provide for those who grieve … a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (Isaiah 61:3).
Daughter Jo-Ann shares this heartfelt tribute: “Though you have left this world, Dad, your laughter, and loving spirit will forever remain in my heart.”

Samuel Leon Stevens Sr. fought his battle with cancer with unwavering courage, surpassing expectations and showing the strength of his spirit. His resilience wasn’t just in his fight—it was in the way he lived, the love he shared, and the dignity he carried through every challenge. Rather than focusing on his trials, we celebrate his triumphs and the grace with which he faced life. God blessed him with the fortitude to stand firm, and he did so with dignity. His battle has ended, but his legacy of courage and love lives on. We, his family, deeply appreciate all who stood with us, offering love, support, and prayers as we honor his courageous life.”

I first met Sam as his supervisor in the Public Safety Department at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in the mid 90’s. I was immediately impressed with his work ethic. He worked hard and was always looking to improve his knowledge and skills in the field. He excelled to the position of Evening Shift Supervisor which he held until his retirement. He was a consummate professional, solid leader and mentor to the officers in his command. Along the way we became friends and continued to be in touch periodically over these many years. I will always remember his spirit, the humor we shared and his tenacity over the many years he battled cancer. It was a privilege to have known him. My condolences to his family and to Diane who I know he cared for very much.
