Celebrating the Legacy of Samuel Leon Stevens Sr.

Samuel Leon Stevens, a man of honor, strength, resilience, and kindness, has left this world, leaving an indelible mark on all who loved him. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on September 15th, 1935, to the late Josephine Burns Stevens and Tom Stevens, he was the fifth child born into their union.

Samuel proudly served his country in the United States Army infantry, achieving the rank of Specialist during his honorable service. His dedication to his role exemplified the values of discipline, perseverance, and leadership that guided his life. Upon completing his military service, he returned home to build a loving family with his wife, Ernestine Stevens, and raised four wonderful children: Samuel Leon Stevens Jr., Jo-Ann Vass, and Mable Louise Stevens. He found immense joy in the lives of his grandchildren: Madinah J. Cox (VA), Nadiyah A. Scarlett (MD), Howard J. Vass (VA), Maurice A. Vass (VA), Cassandra Jones, Leon Jones (BM), Jerome Jones (BM), Fulecia Stevens (BM), Sereena Walker (CG), Sambrianna Rogers, Samuel Rodgers, Elijah Rodgers  and Latoya Stevens (BM), who among the grandchildren held a uniquely close bond with him, sharing many cherished memories. Samuel is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren, each carrying forward his enduring legacy of love and virtue.

Samuel’s nephew Charles Jimmy Stevens and his wife, (Gwen), were among his dearest family members, sharing many cherished moments together. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins who treasured his warmth, wisdom, and loving presence.

Samuel was blessed to share his life not only with his family but also with his longtime dear friend, Diane Novak, who stood by him through many years of companionship and support. Her presence brought added joy and comfort to his journey, and she remains a treasured part of his story.

Samuel was preceded in death by his siblings Leila Mae Deyamport, Beatrice Wince, Eugene Stevens, Roosevelt Stevens, and Willie Stevens. He will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, his remarkable communication skills, and his kindness toward others. Samuel valued trust deeply and instilled its importance in everyone around him. His gentle spirit, unwavering resilience, steadfast character, and vibrant personality will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

“To provide for those who grieve … a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (Isaiah 61:3).

Daughter Jo-Ann shares this heartfelt tribute: “Though you have left this world, Dad, your laughter, and loving spirit will forever remain in my heart.”
