Mary Ann Sullivan
Mary Ann Sullivan, 86, died peacefully on Jan. 16, ‘24 in the Seabrook’s Fraser Center, born on 7/14/37 in Chicago, the daughter of Kenneth P Sullivan and Mary Catherine Coughlin, the oldest of 5 children. In Chicago she attended St. Dorothy’s and St. Xavier Academy, before entering the Sisters of Mercy (1955-82, Sr. Kenneth Mary), then St. Xavier College (B.A.), St. Louis U. (M.A.), & U. of Chicago (M.A.), with IL certificates/licenses in counseling and alcohol/drug addiction therapy, employed at Grant Hospital and several HMO EAPs. She taught in the Mercy schools, was on the St. Xavier College faculty, served in the Mercy headquarters, the Chicago Archdiocesan school office and Mundelein College staff, besides being a co-founder and Mercy rep of 8th Day Center, a social justice office staffed by the religious communities of the Archdiocese.
Her passion was always art (Lincoln Park Studio, American Academy, Evanston Art Center and School of the Art Institute) with later study in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Two years later they moved to Hilton Head Island, SC where she carried on with her art (abstract/expressionist), maintained a studio and exhibited in the local galleries, especially the H.H. Art League, Society of Bluffton Artists and others. All her life she was an ardent social justice activist, and a member of Hilton Head for Peace, Pax Christi H.H. and St. Francis parish. She was an avid participant in the D.R. Butler reading group, which had a great influence on her philosophy of life. She traveled to Western Europe, Italy and around the U.S. She loved the outdoors, hiking, and photography. But most of all, she cherished living here with all her friends.
She is preceded in death by brothers Jack (Lois) and Donald (Carole), survived by her spouse, Finian D. Taylor, and sister Virginia (Chicago), brother Kenneth (Mary Ann) (Lancaster SC) and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation Friday January 26, 2024 from 4-8 P.M. at Cappetta’s West Suburban Funeral Home & Cremation Services 4920 Main St.,Downers Grove.
