Carl Turk
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Carl E. Turk on May 19, 2026 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Carl was born on May 24, 1967 in Indianapolis to Ed and Barbara (Vaughn) Turk.
Carl – beloved husband of Barbara Turk; proud father of Lucas and Kiera Turk; dedicated brother of Dewayne (Barbara) Turk and Jennifer (Dave) Bigley; beloved son-in law of Kurt (Stanja) Broennimann; cherished brother-in-law of Brigitte Broennimann and loving uncle and cousin.
He was raised in Indiana and graduated from Noblesville High School in 1985. Carl’s worldview expanded through his service in the Marines, where he traveled extensively and built meaningful relationships with people from all walks of life. One of his most impactful experiences in the service was his time on embassy duty in Damascus, Syria followed by Bern, Switzerland where he met his wife, Barbara. Carl decided being in the Marines and moving around was something he did not want for his fiancé, so they both eventually moved to the United States and attended Indiana University.
Carl and Barbara shared their love for traveling and lived in various places including London, England where their two children, Lucas and Kiera, were born. In order to be closer to Carl’s family, they decided to come back to the US and chose Downers Grove, IL as their home. This is where Carl showed his dedication to and passion for youth soccer and community building.
Carl was truly an extraordinary person with a strong moral compass and a genuine heart for others. He never measured people by their profession, status, or wealth. Instead, he cared about character — how people treated one another, how they showed up for their neighbors, and the positive difference they made in the world.
As a husband and father, Carl gave so much of himself to our family. He brought laughter and light into our lives even during difficult times. He was completely devoted to Lucas and Kiera and embraced fatherhood with great love, joy, and pride.
Carl is remembered for his warmth, his loyalty, and his gift for bringing out the best in others. He built lasting friendships wherever he went and generously shared his deep love of music, sport, travel and life in general.
His presence made life richer for all of us, and his absence leaves a deep emptiness – one we will never fill. He will be remembered with immense love by family and friends.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 29th, 2026, at Cappetta’s West Suburban Funeral Home, 4920 Main St., Downers Grove, IL 60515, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Carl was a wonderful man and a great friend to me and my family. Carl had a heart of gold that was felt by everyone who crossed his path, but nowhere was his devotion more evident than in the beautiful life and love he shared with Barbara, and their children. Together they poured everything into their family and the community around them.
I had the pleasure of coaching at the Roadrunners when he took over as president, and even had the chance to coach Lucas and Kiera. He made my time with the Roadrunners very memorable, and I will forever be grateful for his friendship. I would always look forward to introducing people to Carl whether at the Roadrunners, at a concert, or at one of his favorite restaurants. He had a rare gift for making a stranger feel like an old friend within minutes.
While Carl is no longer with us, his influence and generosity are already shaping the next generation in Downers Grove and beyond. Every time my five-year-old son Otis dresses up as a Marine, he tells me he wants to be a tough Marine just like Carl. As a father, I can honestly say that if my kids grow up to have even a fraction of Carl’s integrity, toughness, and heart, I will be incredibly proud of the people they become.
With love,
Andy Masteller & family
Dear Andy and Family –
Thank you for the beautiful words and support.
Barbara & Family
Carl was a pillar in the Downers Grove community. In many aspects, he WAS Downers Grove. He knew just about everybody, and many people benefited from his kindness and generosity. For our family, Carl went out of his way on multiple occasions to lend a hand. Our children were friends and he was especially kind to our oldest son Daniel, who has autism. Carl always stopped to chat with him. These are small things that mean a lot.
Besides his wonderful giving nature, he was a lot of fun! Whether we were chatting about our hometown in Indiana, discussing music or soccer, or just shooting the breeze, I always welcomed these opportunities: seeing him at a game or an event always brought a smile to my face. I know Carl will be remembered and appreciated by all who were touched by his wonderful life.
Sending our deepest condolences to Barbara, Lucas, and Kiera.
Benton’s wish they could be there for the services. We will be thinking of all of you.
Hello Kate and family –
Thank you for reaching out and your kind words and tribute to Carl. He will be thoroughly missed – he fought so long and his body just couldn’t take it anymore.
Thank you – Barbara
