Robert William Rietjens Obituary (1932–2025)

Robert William Rietjens, 92, of Oak Brook Illinois, passed away at home on January 21, 2025.

Robert was born in Dubuque, Iowa to Agnes and Louie Rietjens in 1932. He grew up in Chicago, graduated from Kelly High School, and briefly attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Bob enjoyed his career with the Natural Gas Pipeline Company for over 30 years, with fond memories of running the annual golf outing and long Friday lunches.

Bob met his true love, Josephine Fasone, at the teen club at All Saints Church. They married in 1952, and together raised a family of 5 children. Known lovingly under many nicknames, Bob had a loving & welcoming spirit, humor, generosity, strength of character, big soft hands, and remarkable ability to have a conversation with anyone. He was the consummate host, whether it be to watch the Bears game, play cards, or share wonderful Sunday feasts.

Bob retired early and traveled with Josephine and their lifelong friends. He loved adventure and travelling, slowing only as health demanded. Weeks were arranged according to visits to be made, while months brought birthdays, anniversaries, communions, and graduations. When not on an adventure, Scrabble, police dramas and his newspapers were his favorite pastimes. Finally, he relished his time smoking a cigar and talking for hours with neighbors, friends, family, and a stranger walking by.

Bob lived his best life every day using a simple formula; family, friends, good food, great wine and dessert. It was a life well-lived, full of love and joy.  We are all proud to call him Dad, Papa and Great-Grandpa.

Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Josephine, his parents, and beloved daughter April Rietjens Sedall.

Robert is survived by his children, Robin (Reid) Rietjens Hamre, Cheryl Rietjens, Bill (Cheryl) Rietjens, (Steve) Sedall, and Mary (Eric) Jurasas, twelve grandchildren: Lori (Josh) Hamre-Jenkins, Aaron Heerdt, Rex (Heather) Hamre, Cara (Stef)Egbert, Robert (Jessica) Rietjens, Ashley (Tom) Sipple, Lauren Sedall, William Rietjens, Christina Sedall, Ricky Rietjens, Roseanna Jurasas and Josephine Jurasas, and their thirteen great-grandchildren; Augustus, Lila, Vince, Hank, Luke, Nora, Stella, Brody, Quinn, Eden, Faie, Jack and Iris.
