James Baker
James Michael Baker died peacefully January 20, 2024 surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of 65 years to Janet Myrna Retzel Baker; proud father of the late James Michael Jr., Jay Allan (the late Lisa), Jeanne Baker (the late William Walsh) and William Arthur (Dawn Rita); devoted grandfather of Michael (Aime), Casey (Megan), Neena Jade, Zachary, Kiona, and Owen; devoted great grandfather of Ellie and Noah. Preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Hengels and Gilmer Baker. Fond brother preceded in death by Barbara, Madeline, Joanne, Gilmer, Margaret, and Doris. Survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was known as Jim to family and friends. He was born October 27, 1934 and raised in LaGrange just outside Chicago. Raised in large part by his many sisters, Jim worked hard from an early age.
After graduating high school from La Grange Township, Jim entered the United States Army earning airborne wings and serving honorably. Next he completed trade school as an apprentice plasterer, discovering his love of the trade and career path. Jim and his long time friend Skip partnered on countless jobs for more than 45 years.
Jim was an avid golfer and bowler with a love of playing and coaching. He made many friends throughout his life. His legacy as husband, dad, grandpa, great grandfather always brought a big smile to his face and a loud chuckle that could be heard far and wide. Respected for being loyal, warm, hardworking and welcoming. A good man who will be missed by all.
Friends and family are invited to the Visitation on Sunday, January 28th, 3:00pm until 7:00pm at Cappetta’s West Suburban Funeral Home located at 4920 Main St, Downers Grove, IL 60515
A Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 29th at Zion Lutheran Church, 204 S. Grant in Hinsdale. Friends and family are welcome to gather at 10am for the 10:30 service. Burial and luncheon reception in the church fellowship hall to follow.
I will truly miss you my dear friend and golfing buddy. Your composure was always friendly in every way. I hope to play many rounds with you on that heavenly golf course.
