Alan Leo Winiecki

Alan Leo Winiecki, 84, of Downers Grove, IL. Peacefully passed away on June 5, 2024. Al was the loving husband to Mary Winiecki. Al is predeceased by his parents, Leo and Margaret Winiecki, and his late brother Theodore Winiecki. Cherished father of Eric (Wendy Swyt) Winiecki, Kurt (Felicia) Winiecki, and Christine (Michael) Evans. Devoted Grandfather to Leo, Eva, Janey, Simon, and Ryan. Fond Uncle of Donna Winiecki, Robert (Bob) Winiecki, Barbara Aulert, David Nolan, Chris Nolan, Amanda Nolan, Martha Bieltzki-Sajdak, Kristen Hopper and Morgan Halloran

Al attended Steinmetz High School on the west side of Chicago where he excelled in track and field. In 1961, he met Mary J. Bielitzki at a dance class. They married on July 13, 1963. They moved to Downers Grove in 1965. In 1967 he earned a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Al started working at Motorola and then worked at Argonne National Labs for over 25 years. In 1986, Al co-invented and was granted a patent for (at least) a Masked Multichannel Analyzer and a Remote Temperature-Set-Point Controller. He went on to work at Lucent, Bell Labs, again Argonne, and did work in Peru for the United Nations. Al fixed his cars and did his best to teach his children the same. He was first on the block to unscramble cable channels and have a home computer. In 1972 he packed up the family Chevy Chevelle station wagon and drove to Mexico City, camping all the way. The next year it was travelling by car to Banff. The next year: Yosemite and Yellowstone. Al never slowed down. His active life included softball, swimming, weightlifting, hiking, motorcycling and biking. In his “down time,” he read and discussed philosophy and theology. Al enjoyed life. He liked to laugh, and he did that a lot.

Funeral Services Monday, June 10th, 2024 from 9:00am to 10:00am at Cappetta’s West Suburban Funeral Home, Church Services 10:30am at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Downers Grove.
